Cradle Cap

Seborrheic dermatitis, also known as cradle cap is very common on babies heads, foreheads, and ears. It is nothing to be worried about and it does not mean that your baby has poor hygiene. About half of all babies have some cradle cap in their first year.

You can help prevent cradle cap by washing your baby’s hair (or head) two to three times per week with a gentle shampoo or cleanser. After the bath, brush your baby’s hair with a soft brush but don’t pick at the scales as this can cause irritation.

If the flakes are loose, you could apply a little bit of baby oil to your baby’s head and brush gently with a brush or comb and brush the flakes away.

Your pediatrician may also prescribe a special shampoo for your baby.

As your baby’s hormones regulate and the oil-producing glands slow down, the cradle cap should clear up.
