H.A.L.T.! Stop and think.
Are you:
Hungry
Angry
Lonely
Tired?
Take care of your most basic needs first. That’s what we do for our babies, right? Feed them, give them a nap… The same strategies work on a frazzled care-giver.
When we are not taking care of our most basic needs, we can’t possibly take care of our baby. When it can be a simple fix, such as a sandwich, let’s just address it. How many of you skipped lunch today?
If you are feeling angry, it is important to address that as well so you can feel at peace. Are you angry at your partner for not sharing the responsibilities? Talk to your partner about it. Are you angry at your baby for keeping you up all night? That is normal. Talk to a friend or journal about it to get it off your chest.
Being home all day caring for a baby can be very lonely. Call a friend, make a lunch date. Your baby can come along! Invite someone over. Even if your house is a mess. Grown up conversation might be all you need right now.
Of course you are tired. When your baby takes a nap, give yourself permission to take a nap too. Sometimes it’s not that easy, but try to build some rest time into your day somewhere so you feel more fulfilled.
