Babies Need to Stretch Too

Just as we get tight muscles, so do babies and some gentle stretches can help keep them limber and ready for action! Gentle baby stretches also improve overall flexibility, symmetry, and blood flow.

The best stretch is simply to place your baby in tummy time. While in tummy time, he is stretching his hip flexors and lower back in preparation for crawling, rolling, and eventually walking.

*Never overstretch your baby. Don’t ever force a stretch and watch his cues. If he looks unhappy, stop stretching.

You can also add language as you stretch by talking about the body part you are stretching.

Here are some suggestions:

Arm and Shoulder Stretch

Shoulder Stretch

Bicycle Stretch for Legs and Hips

Leg Crossover Stretch

Try to maintain eye contact and conversation with your baby while you perform these stretches because it is a great way to develop language and bonding as well!
