Baby in a Basket

An inexpensive laundry basket can serve as a tool to teach functional sitting to your baby!

*Never leave your baby unattended in a laundry basket.
*Never put your baby in the bathtub in a laundry basket.
*Avoid wicker baskets that can have sharp edges.

Activities:

  • Put a blanket or pillow in the basket to help support your baby, then place your baby sitting in the basket with some toys so she can be supported, but still turn her trunk side to side.
  • Fill a laundry basket with small plastic balls (like the colorful balls found in a ball pit). Place your baby in the center so she is supported by the balls and encourage her to pick up the balls, transfer them from hand to hand, and bring them to her mouth to explore. The pressure all over her body from the plastic balls is also a great sensory activity.
  • Put pillows and blankets in the basket, then place your baby in sitting in the center. Slowly and gently move the basket forward and back and side to side to provide some movement. Help her remain vertical while the basket moves. This is great for her balance and trunk muscles.
